expoEM 2012 Preview

expoEM 2012 will once again be at Bracknell on 19-20 May.  This year we have two very special features that are new to expoEM which we hope will add to your enjoyment in visiting the show.

The first is a track building workshop being run by Roy Jackson and John McCrea. It is intended to provide beginners with an opportunity to build a point at expoEM and provide the necessary confidence and encouragement to go on to build a layout.  Spaces for the workshop will be limited. Please contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it to book. There will be a charge of £20 for the workshop. This will include a jig, for future use, plus all materials required. All you need to provide is a few basic tools and a soldering iron.

The workshop will be supplemented by talks on researching and building layouts based on prototype locations.  That along with the various demonstrations should give the beginner or armchair modeller all the encouragement needed to get started on that first project in EM gauge.

The second innovation at expoEM this year will be a feature on modelling using 18.2 track in scales other than 4mm/foot.  We are delighted that Gordon and Maggie Gravitt have agreed to bring their much acclaimed Pempoul modelled in 1: 50 scale.  18.2 track is used in their excellent portrayal of the metre gauge Reséau Breton system that once served much of inland Brittany connecting rural villages and towns to the SNCF main lines. This will be supplemented by a demonstration put on by the Chippenham Area Group of wider use of 18.2mm track in other scales.

We are very pleased to announce that Bob Essery will be attending and will be holding a clinic on Authentic Layout Operations.

There will of course the usual variety of layouts, trade support and demonstrators.  Layouts attending this year include:

Stoke by Nayfield, the new P4 layout from Dave Hawkins

Kielder Forest, built by the NE Area group

Portskerra, Scottish Highlands by Tim Tincknell

Foxup built by the late Mike Hensbury

Clutton, Tim Venton’s popular GWR representation

Ashbury Brook, Clive Abbott’s representation of ex-LSWR in 1930s

St Minion, Cornish china clay from the East Riding Finescale Group
