The EM Gauge Society and the Scalefour Society are pleased to present:

A very special day of finescale railway modelling incorporating the
    Chris Kedgley Memorial Skills Day

    Saturday 12th March 2016

Those of you with no interest in cricket need not fear that we are going to inflict upon you tales of the English summer and the sound of leather upon willow! We hit upon (sorry!) 101 Not Out because in 2016 the Scalefour Society will celebrate its 40th anniversary, and this year (2015) the EM Gauge Society is celebrating its 60th, so next year will be 61. So that gives us 101 years of finescale modelling and still going strong...

Planning for this landmark joint event is now complete. It won’t be a typical model railway experience; rather it’s going to focus - in a number of specific areas - on development of skills for finescale modelling. More than that, we aim to provide inspiration, learning and encouragement. And, of course, enjoyment and entertainment!

This year we are back at Davyhulme for one year. The centre has taken a booking on this weekend for subsequent years which regretably will mean a change of venue for 2017. There will be a free vintage bus service from Urmston Station to and from the venue.

Refreshments are available on site or at various venues in the Trafford Centre also at a pub across the road that serves food. Members entry fee will be £7 with a concession rate for families and children.Tickets are valid for both days.

Conversion of rolling stock is a simple job with steam out line being a little more time consuming. Joining the Society brings access to a large manual explaining and showing how it is done along with access to the EMGS Trade Officer who is able to supply items you may need all stocked at the same place and at reasonable prices.

The venue has free parking for over 200 cars with public transport passing the entrance to the centre.

    Little things mean a lot”
    With Dave Hawkins
It is often said that it should be possible to tell the time and place of a model railway without there being any locomotives or rolling stock on the layout, merely by observing the buildings, signals, and other railway infrastructure. Dave believes that we should also be able to do this by observing things beyond the railway fence, especially the small details. The talk will look at ways in which this can be achieved by regarding such items as models in their own right rather than mere scenic accessories. It will cover, among other things: research, construction, artwork, painting and weathering..

At the end of the evening you are invited to join us at "The Station" pub next to Bitterne station.

    11.00 - 16.30The Kidderminster Railway Museum

The 5th Chris Kedgley Memorial Skills Day

    Please note

Disabled access: There is a ramp for wheelchairs giving access to the ground floor of the museum. However, the Skills Day event is taking place on the upper floor and we very much regret that the museum website (http://www.krm.org.uk/) states there is, unfortunately, no disabled access to the upper floor, on the advice of the Fire Officer.

The family of Chris Kedgley, the former Chairman of the EM Gauge Society (and active member of the Scalefour Society) who passed away in June 2013, “gifted” his models and un-built kits to the EMGS.  Chris was a highly skilled modeller who as well as building also painted and lined his models.

With the proceeds of sale from these models now exceeding well over £5,000 the EMGS Board have decided to hold a fifth “Skills Day” (the first in the Midlands) in his memory.

The event will feature over a dozen experienced modellers demonstrating a wide range of skills, plus “Kitedale” an ex L&Y P4 layout presented by Ray Hodson and “Trewithick” a GWR EM layout presented by Graeme Vickery. Both layouts will be presented “sans drapes”

    Date: Sat March 10th 2018

Location: The Kidderminster Railway Museum (adjacent to the Severn Valley Railway
station) Comberton Hill, Kidderminster, DY10 1QX

    EMGS Announcement

The 6th Chris Kedgley Memorial Skills Day – Saturday March 9th 2019

We are pleased to announce that the EM Gauge Society and the Scalefour Society are holding in March 2019 another Skills Day event. This is the first one to take place in Scotland and builds on the successful formula of an informal, informative gathering of modellers.  As in previous years, the EMGS involvement is again being funded by the bequest of Chris Kedgley, former Chairman of the EM Gauge Society and active member of the Scalefour Society who passed away in June 2013.

Linlithgow is an attractive historic town on the Lochside, almost midway between Glasgow and Edinburgh, with good access from all directions. The M9 serves the town. Four electric trains an hour run from Edinburgh, two an hour from Glasgow.  The Low Port centre is across the road from the station. Even in March, for a weekend break the area has much to offer, from Linlithgow Palace, the three Forth Bridges and the Kelpies to the Falkirk Wheel, not to mention the convenient cities of Edinburgh, Glasgow and Stirling.

As ever, the emphasis will be on showing and telling. So, the Skills Day 2019 in Linlithgow will feature a dozen experienced modellers demonstrating a wide range of skills together with innovative ideas and four layouts will show some of these in practice.

    Date: Saturday March 9th 2019

Location: Low Port Centre, 1 Blackness Road, Linlithgow, West Lothian, EH49 7HZ
    Web: https://activewestlothian.com/active-outdoors/low-port-centre

    Opening Times:          10.00am to 4.30pm

Cost:               Entry is free, but donations are encouraged.

Catering:         Teas and coffees will be available. For lunch, a wide variety of hostelries and cafes is close at hand.

Demonstrations mix innovative techniques with new slants on established skills, and will cover: innovative turntable operation, mechatronics (the integration of electronics and mechanisms), loco chassis construction, ‘stay-alive’ enhancements for DCC locos, modelling rock formations, weathering stone and other materials, controlling servo points, plastic card modelling with the Silhouette cutter, 3D printing, carriage lighting.

    Layouts:

    • Wharfeside (EM) – layout under construction. See how the baseboards and track were built, as well as CSB chassis locos performing their magic.
    • Union Mills (P4) – a finished small scenic layout, which welcomes visiting locomotives
    • Kettlewell (P4) – a scenic model with prototypical operation in two eras, featuring an innovative fiddle yard and mechanical interlocking of turnouts and signals
    • Cadhay Sidings (P4) – part of this Southern Railway layout which demonstrates the use of digital systems for realistic block instruments and realistic signalling.
    • Castle Caereinion (009) – a different gauge illustrating scenic techniques

    Disabled access: available

Accommodation:  A wide variety at all price ranges is available. If researching on the web, look for the adjacent Falkirk as well as Linlithgow, or Queensferry on the River Forth.

This event is being organised by the various area groups in Scotland and the Borders of the EM Gauge Society and the Scalefour Society www.emgs.org and scalefour.org

    “South Hants Club at Home”

The next meeting will be at Portsmouth on Tuesday 12th March
We don't have a speaker for this meeting, so we'd like to invite everyone to come along, have a chat, and see our 'work-in-progress' layouts.
These include Eastwood (P4, L&Y roundy-roundy), Cromwell Road (EM Late 1950s minor London terminus) ... and we're also working on a new fiddle yard for Hope-under-Dinmore.

Eastwood needs to be ready for Scalefour North in April, and Hop for expoEM in May ... so work is well advanced.

Tea/coffee and biscuits will be available throughout the evening.

The meeting is open to all, whatever scale and standards you work in.

The next meeting will be held on Tuesday 9th July from 7.30pm at the South Hants Model Railway Club clubrooms, Fort Widley, Portsdown Hill Road, Portsmouth PO6 3LS

“Bramsden – an East Suffolk Market town”

Dave Hawkins will be talking about his 1950's townscape, a project in his head for over forty years and finally coming to fruition. Dave will be happy discuss any aspect of this model, including overall design, building construction, production of computer-generated graphics and a first attempt at producing etched components. Also, why on earth he embarked on the project in the first place! Never fear, there is a railway connection and hopefully a relevance to layout design in general.

Additionally, in a similar vein, the South Hants ‘Cromwell Road’ group will be showing prototype mock ups for their ambitious cityscape which will form a part of this new EM layout

Tea/coffee and biscuits will be available at the meeting.

At the end of the evening members are invited to join the Portsmouth lads at a local pub just down the road before they go home.

The meeting is open to all, whatever scale and standards you work in.
